How we choose and score

What we play, what we notice and how a number takes shape.

What we consider

The collection draws from games currently accessible to UK players on recognised platforms. A release date does not make one candidate more deserving than another.

Where picks begin

The next game may arrive through a reader, a conversation or a small studio. We look for a recognisable idea and never sell a position on the shortlist.

Time with the game

We complete games that have an ending and spend meaningful time with those that do not. Friends and unfamiliar players join reviews of shared modes. A trailer never replaces those sessions.

What shapes a verdict

Our judgement considers whether the idea holds together, whether playing feels good, whether visuals, audio and performance deliver, and whether difficulty choices, text, inputs and comfort settings welcome a broad audience.

The number explained

Each review receives a score out of five, in tenths. A 4.8+ is exceptional, 4.5–4.7 strongly recommended, 4.0–4.4 appealing to the right player, and under 4.0 mainly for genre devotees. Games falling short are not included.

Time and money

You will find a place to put the game down and an explanation of costs beyond buying it. Memberships, additional content, passes, virtual purchases and return rewards belong in that explanation.

Fitting an evening

Notes about a short task, a longer stretch or playing together help you plan. The mood of a game and the shape of a session do not change its numerical score.

What stays outside

No company purchases a favourable number or a feature. We do not fabricate player counts or present marketing footage as evidence that we played the game.

Updates and revisits

Store links and platform information receive repeat checks. A substantial gameplay update means fresh play before we amend an earlier judgement.
